Mate is a tree in the holly family. Its leaves are used to make a beverage known by the same name, yerba mate. This beverage is enjoyed brewed, and is traditionally drunk from a gourd using a "bombilla", a metal straw with a filter. Grapefruit was discovered in Puerto Rico in the middle of the 18th century. Soon it was also being grown in North America, in Florida, Texas, and California.
